  4. Once Upon the Cross is a typically brutal set from Deicide that is particularly notable for the guitar pyrotechnics of Eric and Brian Hoffman. Lyrically, the band might be reiterating their Satanic themes, but musically, the band continues to grow.8/
  5. 'Once Upon The Cross' appears to me to be the most archtypical Deicide album; unfortunately, it's also the most generic. While this LP does capture the 'Deicide sound' quite effectively, it fails to generate anything else except recognition of a pattern in the listener.
  6. The opener "Once Upon the Cross" is a blast, being one of the most dramatic Deicide songs so far with the grand biblical setting and the rising, angry mob-like vocal chanting. Solid death metal, except it seems to go that extra mile to become memorable. The drum rhythms have some creative syncopation to them.
  7. Once Upon the Cross is possibly Deicide's best record. I'm not much into satanism or anti-christianity, I just like the sound of their brutal death metal. The guitars, drums and vocals are all really awesome. This album contains one of their best /5(90).
